Jan. 30th, 2022 10:30 pmThere is a distinct irony to the fact that MJ is dating a man who gets himself injured on a regular basis, but MJ is the one who carries scars on his body. It's just a symptom of being human, he knows, and it's not a big deal most of the time. When he's modeling, anything he doesn't want showing is either covered with makeup or photoshopped out or both. And he has a good sense of his own body and how he’s perceived in the world, and that perception is typically “very hot”, so it’s not a problem most of the time.
It’s a problem right now.
It’s a problem because the makeup artist on the shoot splays her fingers around the gashes his dad left on his shoulder with a beer bottle and says, with genuine sympathy, oh, that must've hurt, and it's a problem because suddenly he needs air, he needs space, he needs more of those two things than the entire city of NYC can give him. Thank god he has a pretty good relationship with this photographer and thank god MJ Watson has a good reputation for being easy to work with because maybe he won't have fucked things up too badly by bailing on the shoot.
Peter's not home when he gets to the apartment, which is just as well because MJ's not ready to talk to anyone just yet. He strips out of the clothes he wore to the shoot and puts on a pair of sweatpants, and he considers calling Aunt Anna who gave him a place to live and helped him pull himself together when he first got here, and he considers calling Peter because Peter loves him and will come for him if MJ asks, and then he finds himself sitting in the closet because there was a time when the closet was one of the safer places to be, and sometimes you just need to sit somewhere quiet and safe until you start feeling like an adult who hasn't seen your father in years again.
